Would you do it? Get that one cosmetic surgery that’s guaranteed to make you attractive and carefree, forever?
In Uglies society seems to be built around this idea. On one side of the river live the uglies, the folks who haven’t had this surgery yet, and on the other side live the beauties, perpetually partying and happy.
Tally will have the surgery soon, which is amazing, because she can’t wait to be at peace. It’s what she’s looked forward to for years—what she and everyone else have been taught to look forward to. But as the date approaches people in her life begin to act strangely . . .
Uglies has an intriguing concept. Nice! But the movie doesn’t dig deep. The writing is mostly obvious and repetitive, and when it isn’t, it feels rushed. Some sort of action-sports flash-mobs are thrown in, too; all of the sudden music is blaring, they’re doing this now, and it’s not clear what it has to do with anything.
